She loves I value independently spending time on something that's important to me. If you boil it all down, I get to manage my own destiny. I get to do what I want to do and surround myself with the things I love.
Inspiration Vintage fabric. I maintain a huge stash. It's even better when old fabric has been constructed into something. Looking at the way someone has put together and antique apron, for example, gives you a peek into her imagination and creativity.
Mantra My mantra is, 'Go easy on yourself.' It's easy to get wound up about stuff. If you stay relaxed, you can enjoy what you're doing.

Amy Butler has revolutionised the quilting world with her vibrant and contemporary ranges of fabrics. So where did it all begin?

Art of the MidwestIn 1992 Amy Butler, and her husband Dave, founded the “Art of the Midwest” studio in Ohio. At the time Amy was a creative director at Hallmark and Dave was an art director at a Kansas City creative agency. Starting with the grand sum of $1,000, they took the plunge and left their jobs to start the studio.

Choosing to live in the country, they each did a lot of different jobs to make ends meet. Dave did freelance graphic work, whilst Amy picked apples and painted surface designs that she sold through an ex-Hallmark friend.

As they only had one vehicle, which Dave needed to use to get to the city, the only job Amy could get within walking distance was at the local orchard! At night she painted and sewed. Through the years Amy and her husband built a graphic design and product development business for various brands – with Amy beginning to do illustration full time.

In 1997 Amy began producing freelance stories for Country Living magazine. This was the start of Amy’s craft business - she designed two sewing patterns that were sold through the magazine as an accompaniment to the "how-to" stories she produced. At that point Amy saw her sewing patterns as a side project to complement her illustration career.

After a couple years the magazine ended their fulfilment service and Amy was left with strong demand for her sewing patterns but no way to get them to customers. It was at this point that Amy chose to exhibit at the International Quilt Market in Houston, taking a 10’ by 10’ booth. As they say... the rest is history.

Amy Butler fabric is one of our most popular patchwork fabrics. Her contemporary designs add a creative flare to any project, and are well suited to both quilting and fashion. Her Midwest Modern fabric collection emphasizes simplicity and integrity of craft, drawing its inspiration from the natural world and the lives of real people.

Her new Daisy Chain fabric collection features a soothing, calm blend of growing green, neutral, grey, misty blue and clean turquoise.
